The basics
Balloon Columns, Towers and Pillars: What They Are
Columns, towers, pillars and posts all describe one thing: a vertical stack of balloons on a pole with a weighted base.
Since a balloon column stands up by itself, usually 5 to 8 feet tall, it can go almost anywhere: on both sides of a front door, at each end of a stage, along a ceremony aisle, at the corners of a dance floor or next to an expo booth. Columns are the most flexible pieces of balloon decor we build and the simplest way to add height to a room without hanging anything from the ceiling.
They're also the most budget-friendly way to make an entrance. A pair of columns costs less than a full balloon arch, and you can join their tops with an arch later, which is the arch-and-columns setup you see at school dances, church events and grand openings.
Column styles
Balloon Column Styles
Every column starts with the same pole and base. What changes is the pattern built around it.
Classic stacked columns
Four-balloon clusters stacked tightly up the pole, in a single color or in bands of color. Clean, bold and the least expensive column we make.
Spiral balloon columns (2, 3 and 4 colors)
Offset the colors from one cluster to the next and they twist up the pole like a barber pole. Two-color spirals look crisp, three-color spirals (red, white and blue for the 4th of July, or silver, black and white for game night) are the most requested, and four-color spirals suit rainbow and Fiesta themes.
Organic balloon columns
Mixed sizes in loose clusters for a softer, fuller column that matches an organic arch or garland. They take more balloons than classic columns, so they cost more, and they're the modern pick for weddings and showers.
Themed and novelty columns
Columns can turn into characters and objects: a saguaro cactus for a Fiesta or western party, a pencil for back-to-school, a palm tree for a pool party, a stoplight for a cars theme or a Grinch at Christmas. Themed columns are a fun way to dress up a school hallway or a kids' party.

Toppers
Balloon Columns With Numbers and Toppers
A topper turns a plain column into one that's clearly about your celebration.
- Number toppers: a 34- or 40-inch foil number for a birthday age, an anniversary or a class year. This is the column style we're asked for most.
- Stars, hearts and crowns: foil shapes that suit grad parties, Valentine's Day and a quinceañera's court.
- Bubble balloon toppers: a clear bubble balloon filled with confetti or feathers.
- Grad caps and diplomas: for grad parties, senior nights and signing days.
- Logo or letter panels: for business events, ribbon cuttings and store openings.
Sizing
Balloon Column Heights and Balloon Counts
A standard column stands about 6 feet tall before you add the topper.
| Column | Height | Balloons (approx.) |
|---|---|---|
| Mini or tabletop column | 2–3 ft | 12–20 |
| Standard classic or spiral column | 5–6 ft | 40–60 (11-inch) |
| Tall classic column | 7–8 ft | 60–80 (11-inch) |
| Organic column | 5–7 ft | 60–100+ (mixed sizes) |
These counts cover the body of the column. Toppers, bases and any clusters around the foot add a few more.
What size balloons make a column? Most columns use 11-inch latex balloons in clusters of four, which builds a column roughly 18–20 inches across. Organic columns work in 5-inch and 16- to 18-inch balloons for texture.
Pricing
How Much Do Balloon Columns Cost in San Antonio?
Most single columns fall between $85 and $250, depending on the style and the topper.
| Column | Starting at |
|---|---|
| Mini tabletop column | $55 |
| Classic column | $85 |
| Spiral column (2–4 colors) | $105 |
| Themed column (graduation, Fiesta, holiday) | $135 |
| Organic column | $165 |
| Balloon tower with number or star topper | $175 |
Prices are per column, delivered and set in place within our core San Antonio service area.
How much do two balloon columns cost? Most entrances use a pair, so budget about $170–$500 for two, depending on style. Pairs are priced better than two singles, and adding an arch between them costs less than ordering both pieces separately.
Placement
Where Balloon Columns Go
Columns look their best in pairs, framing something worth looking at.
Entrances
Both sides of a front door, a venue door or a storefront, so nobody has to ask where the party is.
Stages and DJ booths
A column at each end of the stage or DJ table frames whoever is up there in every photo.
Wedding aisles
Short columns lining the aisle, or two tall ones where the couple stands, indoors or under the oaks at a ranch venue.
Dance floors
Columns at the corners of the dance floor, sometimes linked overhead with a garland canopy.
Expo and trade show booths
Brand-color columns help a booth stand out from the far end of the aisle at downtown conventions and expos.
Gyms and school halls
Rows of school-color columns for graduations, prom, homecoming and senior night.
Occasions
Balloon Columns for Graduations, Weddings, Birthdays and Holidays
Graduation season keeps us busiest with columns, but they suit nearly every kind of event.
- Graduation: school-color towers topped with grad caps, stars or the class year, for backyard grad parties, signing days, prom and senior night.
- Weddings and bridal showers: organic columns in ivory and gold or soft blush, placed at the altar, the entrance and the reception.
- Birthdays: a column with the age on top, from first birthdays to 60ths.
- Gender reveals: columns split between pink and blue, topped with a big question mark.
- Corporate events and expos: brand-color columns for booths, lobbies and ribbon cuttings.
- Fiesta and holidays: bright Fiesta columns in April, plus Christmas, Halloween, Valentine's, Easter and patriotic 4th of July columns.
- Quinceañeras and sweet 16s: tall columns flanking the court's grand entrance.
Outdoor columns
Outdoor Balloon Columns in San Antonio Weather
Columns are top-heavy and catch the wind, so the outdoor ones are built a little differently.
- Outdoor columns get heavier bases and are tied off to a post, rail or fence whenever one is close by.
- Air-filled columns outlast helium ones outside by a wide margin.
- Shade makes the biggest difference: a few hours of July sun will fade and burst latex, and navy, black and maroon heat up first.
- On breezy storefront sidewalks and open ranch lawns, columns go where a wall or building blocks the wind.
Longevity
How Long Does a Balloon Column Last?
Several days indoors. A few hours in direct summer sun.
An air-filled column in an air-conditioned room lasts several days, often a week. Outside in shade it lasts about a day, and in direct San Antonio summer sun it starts to fade and pop within a few hours. For indoor events, columns can be built one to two days early, which helps with morning graduations, school events and Sunday church celebrations.

Questions
Balloon Columns in San Antonio: FAQ
How much do balloon columns cost?
Our classic columns start at $85 each, spirals at $105, organic columns at $165 and towers with toppers at $175. Most entrances use a pair.
How many balloons are in a balloon column?
A 5–6 ft classic column uses roughly 40–60 11-inch balloons and a 7–8 ft column 60–80, while an organic column takes 60–100 or more in mixed sizes.
What size balloons go into a balloon column?
Mostly 11-inch latex balloons in clusters of four. Organic columns mix in 5-inch and 16–18 inch balloons.
How long does a balloon column last?
Several days indoors when air-filled, about a day in outdoor shade, and a few hours in direct summer sun in San Antonio.
Can balloon columns be built ahead of time?
Yes, one to two days early for indoor events. Outdoor columns in summer go up the same day.
Is a balloon tower the same thing as a balloon column or pillar?
Nothing that matters. They're three names for a freestanding stack of balloons on a pole and weighted base, and people tend to say "tower" when there's a big topper.
Can balloon columns have a number on top?
Yes, and it's the topper we're asked for most. A 34- or 40-inch foil number shows off an age, an anniversary or a graduating class.
Do balloon columns need helium?
No. They're air-filled and supported by a pole and a weighted base. Only a floating topper or a bubble balloon might use helium.
What is an organic balloon column?
One built from mixed balloon sizes in loose clusters instead of stacked uniform rings, so it looks fuller and softer, like an organic arch.
